POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Medical Research Librarian performs detailed research in support of rapid review and systematic review projects. Responsibilities include executing intensive biomedical databases and web searches, conduct peer, rapid, and systematic reviews, and manage and evaluate search results using citation management and search assessment tools. The Senior Medical Research Librarian works in a matrixed capacity to support ECRI’s mission, vision, and strategy, as well as its business units across the organization.
Essential Functions
- Execute intensive biomedical database and web searches (e.g., PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, ECRI Guidelines Trust®, ClinicalTrials.gov, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, etc.) on multiple platforms (e.g., PubMed, Embase.com, OVID, EBSCOhost, Wiley, etc.)
- Construct and refine search strategies on a range of clinical medicine and genetic testing topics; perform peer review of search strategies developed by fellow searchers.
- Manage and evaluate search results using citation management and search assessment tools.
- Document search strategies and results according to ECRI guidelines.
- For rapid reviews:
- Communicate with custom response team to define the scope of searches; and
- Shepherd brief reports through research, writing, and editing phases to ensure timely delivery to clients.
- For systematic reviews:
- Attend meetings and collaborate with research team to understand the scope of searches; and
- Complete the full search and documentation process by strict deadlines.
- Provide search support and backup assistance for projects for ECRI's Patient Safety Organization and ISMP's Medication Safety Board.
- Deliver presentations to internal and external customers to promote ECRI products and librarian research activities.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Participate in regular team meetings with fellow searchers to share ideas and improve work quality and efficiency.
- Complete occasional professional development activities.
- Other duties, as assigned.
Accountability Metric(s):
- Complete 2-3 formal client deliverables per week, including rapid review reports and client bibliographies.
- Complete 1-2 full systematic review searches per year.
- Contribute to improvement of work processes.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:
- 3-5 years of experience with biomedical database searching.
- Familiarity with the principles of evidence-based medicine, Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), and EMTREE.
- Proficiency with citation management systems, such as EndNote.
- Experience working in a hospital library, an academic medical center library, or a corporate information center with a healthcare focus.
- Experience documenting, editing, and formatting literature searches for publication using specified guidelines, such as Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) or Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies (PRESS).
- Competency working with a team of professionals to develop a search approach for rapid and systematic reviews, including time management, selection of resources, development and execution of searches, and documentation.
- Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently in a remote/virtual work environment.
Education:
- Master’s Degree in in Library Science (MLS) or Library Information Science (MSLIS) is required.
Computer Skills:
- Proficient with Microsoft Office 365 Suite of products (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated proficiency with biomedical databases and web searching (e.g., PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, ECRI Guidelines Trust®, ClinicalTrials.gov, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, etc.) on multiple platforms (e.g., PubMed, Embase.com, OVID, EBSCOhost, Wiley, etc.)
