Job Description for UNCG LIS practicum student
Institution – Guilford Technical Community College- Five Campus Locations in the area. Most of the practicum would take place at the Jamestown, Greensboro, and High Point campuses.
Task/Job Description-This practicum is designed to give exposure to these specific areas in a community college library. The student would spend a certain amount of time (usually 1 – 3 weeks) working in one of these areas of library services.
Students would be working with professional staff, para-professional staff, and work-study students.

· Library Instruction
· Extension Campuses
· Technical Services
· Library Administration
The goal is to expose the student to all the aspects of working in a community college library.
Task List:
· Answering reference questions.
· Assisting with circulation duties.
· Assisting with planning and conducting library instruction sessions and conducting sessions while being observed.
· Researching and editing LibGuides.
· Technical services tasks such as weeding, collection development, and working with the library catalog collection records.
· Assisting with library publications and marketing materials.
· Assisting with library outreach events.
· Meeting with college administration to discuss their observations on the place of the library in the college community.
· Other tasks as needed.
Requirements-Practicum participants need to be reliable, able to come to work on time at the assigned location, and willing to hear feedback regarding performance. It is expected that once a regular schedule is established that the student would adhere to the schedule on a weekly basis, with changes being allowed for reasonable requests. Students would be expected to give as much advance notice as possible when unable to attend or needing time off. Students would be expected to become familiar with GTCC library and college policies and procedures and adhere to those in the performance of their duties. As noted above students will be working with professional and para-professional staff; in both situations students would be expected to treat their co-workers with courtesy and respect regardless of staff classification.
Hours-Generally students would be expected to be on site during peak time, some period from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday-Friday. Exact days and hours would be determined in a meeting with student supervisor and the student.
