Position Title: Undergraduate Technical Support Assistant
Department: ARCADE — Research and Engagement
Position Type: Student | Part-Time (20 hr/wk) | Temporary (EOT 26-7)
Pay Rate: $15/hr
Position Summary:
ARCADE is seeking a technically skilled Undergraduate Technical Support Assistant to serve as the primary hands-on technical resource for the ARCADE Lab. This part-time student position is dedicated to keeping lab hardware and software running, and to providing direct, ongoing technical support to student and faculty projects across ARCADE — including research studio work, incubator-funded projects, game jams, and coursework. As the Technical Support Assistant, you'll work closely with the ARCADE Director, Unreal Faculty Fellows, student researchers, and lab users to troubleshoot problems, maintain equipment, and keep every active project moving. You'll build real-world skills in technical support, systems administration, and production-level Unreal Engine work — experience that translates directly to careers in game development, real-time 3D production, and technical operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Run and Maintain the ARCADE Lab
• Serve as the primary technical point of contact for the ARCADE Lab, keeping workstations, peripherals, and shared equipment operational day to day.
• Perform routine maintenance, software updates, and hardware troubleshooting on lab PCs and Unreal Engine workstations.
• Maintain an accurate inventory of hardware, software licenses, and peripherals, and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed.
Provide Technical Support Across Ongoing Projects
• Deliver hands-on Unreal Engine technical support to student and faculty projects, including incubator grant projects, research studio work, and game jam teams.
• Troubleshoot Unreal Engine issues spanning Blueprints, packaging/builds, plugins, performance, and version control conflicts.
• Install, configure, and update Unreal Engine versions, plugins, and related software across lab machines.
• Support use of specialized lab equipment (e.g., motion capture, VR/AR hardware, capture rigs) as it relates to active projects.
Document and Standardize Lab Systems
• Create and maintain SOPs, quick-start guides, and troubleshooting documentation for lab equipment and Unreal Engine workflows.
• Provide basic onboarding to new lab users on equipment, software, and lab policies.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced, hands-on experience with Unreal Engine required — including Blueprints, packaging/builds, plugin management, and performance troubleshooting.
• Junior or senior standing in a relevant major (computer science, game design, digital media, or related field).
• Prior experience providing IT or technical support in a lab, studio, or similar hands-on environment.
• Strong troubleshooting instincts and comfort diagnosing hardware and software issues independently.
• Ability to manage and prioritize support requests from multiple concurrent project teams.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Must be a degree-seeking student at UNCG.
• Must be in good academic and financial standing with the university.
Required Application Materials:
• Resume
• Cover Letter
• Portfolio or evidence of Unreal Engine work (project links, demo reel, GitHub, itch.io, or similar)
