Metadata Management Practicum
Description
The Enterprise Data Governance (EDG) team manages and supports UNCG’s Data Governance committees, data quality efforts, and the University's data catalog. We provide data asset cataloging, metadata support, and data quality assurance to all areas of campus. EDG's mission is to provide the university with a clearly defined framework of roles, processes, and policies within which our institutional data is trusted, understood, accurate, and is provided and used in a consistent and meaningful manner. This practicum offers students a chance to experience the range of EDG's department activities. These activities may be of particular interest to students pursuing a career in Information Sciences, and they will benefit people looking for careers in both data management and libraries, from public services positions to technology positions. The practicum experience accommodates a wide range of abilities, skills and interests. Specific projects will be determined by the student’s area of expertise and interest, in conjunction with the goals of the department. Weekly check-ins with the practicum supervisor are required to ensure progress and provide immediate feedback. We especially encourage students from underrepresented or marginalized groups to apply. This is an unpaid practicum. EDG works with students to satisfy the requirements of their degree program so that students will receive credit toward their degree.
Tasks
Practicum students will work closely with EDG team to do the following:
1. Manage and enhance metadata for information assets in the data catalog platform, including working with and developing schema as necessary and building out knowledge web relationships among assets.
2. Engage in activities related to data governance program operations and management.
3. Engage in activities related to platform adoptions, communications, and marketing.
4. Work with the EDG Data Quality Specialist to understand the types of issues and remediation employed.
5. Shadow EDG team staff in meetings with clients and each other (as appropriate) to gain an understanding of work processes.
6. Other duties, as assigned -- the possibilities for learning more about and enhancing our users' experiences are endless!
