Description
The Z. Smith Reynolds Library seeks an entry-level First Year Instruction and Outreach Librarian to teach for-credit and one-shot instruction with an emphasis on first-year students. As part of our outreach program, this position will also create and assess outreach programming, again with an emphasis on first-year students. This librarian will serve as a library liaison to the Writing Program providing course-integrated instruction to first-year writing classes and some collection development.
This is a full-time, ranked Librarian position with faculty status, reporting to the Head of Instruction and Outreach in the Research, Instruction, and Outreach department. ZSR Library faculty are governed by the policies of the Librarians’ Assembly and are evaluated annually on Librarianship (70%), Scholarship and Professional Achievement (20%), and Service (10%).
Duties and Responsibilities
Librarianship (70%)
- Participates in the teaching of credit-bearing information literacy courses with an emphasis on courses relevant to first year students. Responsibilities include creating course materials, conducting classes, and assessing student learning. An average of four 1.5 credit courses per year is the expected for-credit teaching load.
- As part of an outreach working group, develops outreach programs and events for various campus constituencies with an emphasis on first-year student outreach.
- Helps to coordinate our ZSR Library Ambassador program consisting of 15-20 students each year who help plan events and provide feedback to administrators on ZSR programs and services.
- Collaborates with faculty to develop, implement, and assess library instructional sessions for assigned programs and liaison areas, including the creation of instructional materials and/or workshops to support research for individual courses, subject areas, and topics.
- Provides generalized and specialized research assistance to students and faculty via one-on-one consultations, both in-person and online.
- Serves as a liaison to Writing Studies.
- Engages fully and collaborates on departmental and library-wide projects, goals, initiatives, meetings, reports, and documentation.
Scholarship and Professional Achievement (20%)
- Contributes to the profession by engaging in scholarship through publications, presentations, etc., and/or professional achievement through service and recognition from professional organizations or committees.
Service (10%)
- Engages in service that goes beyond assigned responsibilities and effectively benefits the library, the University or the community.

Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or an equivalent master’s degree. Applicants with an expected graduation date of May 2026 will be considered.
- Experience with instruction and/or working with first-year undergraduates in an academic library.
- Knowledge of and experience with information literacy best practices, instructional design, and inclusive teaching practice.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and campus partners.
- Ability to manage time and responsibilities across multiple concurrent activities.
- Demonstrated potential to meet promotion requirements for a ranked, non-tenure track library faculty appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred qualifications are not required. ZSR is committed to helping future colleagues increase their academic knowledge and develop their skills.
- Event planning and coordination experience.
- Experience with online instruction or instructional technologies.
Salary and Rank
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. As an entry-level position, we anticipate this position will be appointed at the Assistant Librarian rank, with a minimum starting salary of $60,000 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package, professional development support, and relocation allowance.
