2026 North Carolina Genealogical Society Paid Internship - NC Cemetery Survey Archival Processing Internship- assist the Records Description and Public Services Units in processing and cataloging materials from the North Carolina Cemetery Survey. The collection includes legacy and newly donated survey forms, maps, photographs, and related documentation that require rehousing, updated description, and integrated processing. These materials contain detailed information on cemetery locations, characteristics, and grave data gathered by volunteers and county coordinators. The North Carolina Cemetery Survey Project began after the 1978 Abandoned Cemeteries Study Committee and expanded in 1984 to document pre‑1913 gravesites statewide. Nearly all counties participated, supplying surveys and maps to the State Archives over several decades. The project remains valuable as historic cemeteries face ongoing threats. In 2022, Archives staff collaborated with the Office of Archaeology to scan survey forms for future GIS mapping. Further work is needed as new materials continue to arrive. Plans include exploring a crowd‑sourcing project to identify cemetery locations and conditions. The intern may join these planning discussions and help create related outreach content for SANC/DNCR social media.
2026 Friends of the Archives Paid Internship - Preventative Conservation Internship - support preservation and collections care, with a primary focus on housing projects and enclosure creation, including work on the ongoing Private Collections scrapbook survey. Under the Conservator’s guidance, the intern will learn to build a variety of archival enclosures and basic conservation techniques, with the possibility of completing a treatment if time allows. The intern will also shadow the Conservator during examinations, documentation, and treatment, assist with environmental monitoring and integrated pest management, and help prepare materials for traveling exhibits.

The position offers up to 300 hours between May and August, with flexible scheduling, supervision from the State Archives outreach unit, and targeted archival processing training. Compensation includes $15/hour plus a travel stipend of up to $1,500 for mileage and limited lodging.
