Primary Purpose of Position:
The State Library is seeking a dedicated and forward-thinking Lead Machine Technician to join our team! This position acts as the lead technician in the Machine Unit. It is responsible for the restoration of Digital Talking Book Machines (DTBM) and Braille eReaders returned by patrons.
This position provides technical support to patrons regarding Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity of the DA2 Digital Talking Book Machine and Humanware Braille eReaders.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Serves as the main point of contact with the National Library Service (NLS) and NLS Multi State Centers to maintain a ready inventory of machine accessories, batteries and spare parts, and communicates frequently with NLS to remain up to date on machine repair and distribution procedures.
- Making substantial hardware repairs along with troubleshooting the cause and nature of software and battery issues.
- Utilizes the principles and tools of electronics repair (multimeter, soldering iron, screwdrivers, battery conditioner, pliers, etc.) to troubleshoot issues and restore Digital Talking Book Machines and Braille eReaders returned by patrons.
- Maintains machine parts and accessories inventory - ordering supplies from the National Library Service (NLS) and updating stock in ABLS library management system (KLAS)
- Receives shipments of machines, accessories and parts, verifying quantity and quality
- Coordinates a small team of volunteers to help with machine cleaning and sorting packing materials
- Provides technical support to patrons regarding Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity of DA2 DTBMs and Humanware Braille eReaders.
- Supports Circulation Department with daily circulation tasks, including driving a 2.5-ton box truck to deliver mail to USPS.
Position/Physical Requirements:
- Typical work schedule is Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:30pm.
- Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the subject's own body with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Work requires close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing; viewing a computer monitor; extensive reading; visual inspections involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes with or without reasonable accommodation.
- The position has significant email contact with National Library Service staff on supply and technical issues, and daily contact with the Machine Unit, Circulation Department, and other ABLS staff for general business purposes.
- This position also supports the Circulation Department with daily circulation tasks, including driving a 2.5-ton box truck to deliver mail to USPS.
- Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Associate's degree in electronics from an appropriately accredited institution.
AND
one year of experience in the repair and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices, preferably including some responsibility for circuit modification.
OR
an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Based on the nature of work performed, may require appropriate licensure by the governing board or commission.

The State Library of North Carolina – Accessible Books and Library Services (SNLC–ABLS) provides library programs and services to North Carolinians who cannot read standard print due to a visual, physical, or learning disability. The SLNC-ABLS is a part of the network of regional libraries operated by the Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) that performs the functions of a public library. The library circulates 800,000 volumes annually to over 12,000+ eligible patrons through special deposit collections in libraries, hospitals, rest homes, and other institutions and the direct delivery of specially designed playback equipment and books and magazines in large print, Braille, and audio formats to individuals directly free of charge via U.S. Mail.
