Primary Duties/Brief Description of Work:
The Greensboro Public Library is seeking a Youth Services Librarian who is an energetic professional. Consistent with the library's mission of providing free and equal access to information and life-long learning and the joys of reading, the position of Youth Services Librarian plans and implements programming including storytimes, afterschool programs for children and teens, family programs, and bilingual/multicultural programs. The position also plans and implements the Summer Reading program. The Youth Services Librarian promotes the use of library services through outreach to schools, parent groups, daycare providers, and other local organizations and through reading lists, bibliographies and displays. The Youth Services Librarian provides customer service, reference assistance, collection development and maintenance, and reader's advisory. Assists with other library functions including circulation, registration, cashier duties, and shelf maintenance.
This position includes the responsibility of opening and closing the facility on specified days, nights and weekends and also includes ensuring that the library environment is conducive for excellent customer service (i.e. reporting equipment problems, leaks, outages, etc. to Manager or supervisor). The Youth Services Librarian is to carry out library and city policies and procedures, i.e. circulation and registration, computer use, cash handling, and behavior guidelines.
The Library reserves the right to transfer employees to other library locations as required by service needs. Employees of the City of Greensboro are expected to perform all duties listed in their position descriptions, as well as other related duties as assigned, according to the City’s four core values of honesty, integrity, stewardship, and respect. The physical duties of the job include standing, walking, reaching, stooping, climbing, lifting, or pushing approximately 40 lbs. This employee must be able to work the hours required including assigned weekends. This employee must also maintain a reliable means of contact (i.e. home or cellular telephone).
This job is Exempt and is not subject to the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's Degree with 1 to 3 years of experience in the specialty focus area of children and/or teens
- “OR”Bachelor's degree with 5 to 7 years of experience in the specialty focus area of children and/or teens
- 2+ years of library programming experience
- Experienced using Microsoft Office software (i.e. Word and Outlook
An Ideal Candidate Would Also Possess (Preferred Qualifications):
- Master's Degree in Library Science
- Experience in storytelling, drama, or public performance
- Experience in publicity and promotion
- 2+ years of increasingly responsible experience working in the library science field
