Coy C. Carpenter Library
Wake Forest Baptist University Medical School / Atrium Forest Wake Forest Baptist / Advocate Health
Winston-Salem, North Carolina (remote)
The Coy C. Carpenter Library at Wake Forest Baptist University Medical School is happy to announce a field experience / internship opportunity for the Spring 2026 semester. Any student currently enrolled in a library, information science, or informatics degree program is welcome to apply. (Enrollment in a for-credit field experience or internship course is preferred but not required.) The goal of this internship is to introduce the student to the unique aspects of academic medical librarianship and give them a solid foundation for future work in the field.
This opportunity is remote although an optional in-person visit can be arranged. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer payment for the field experience / internship at this time.
Description: The student intern will report to a professional medical librarian and will follow a prescribed program including an introduction to medical librarianship and evidence-based medicine. The student will meet with staff from several departments to get an overview of their functions, but the bulk of the internship will involve literature search training in databases including PubMed, Medline Ovid, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, and PsycINFO. The student will meet several times a week with the supervising librarian, and will also work independently but with guidance as needed. The student will also become familiar with LibGuides, which is a staple of academic and medical libraries, and may be asked to develop or maintain LibGuides with supervision. Ultimately, the primary goal will be for the intern to be able to conduct in-depth literature searches on behalf of the library’s patrons (doctors, nurses, residents, fellows, and graduate students). In addition, the intern will participate in one or more systematic review projects.
Application deadline: December 4, 2025
Application process: Please submit an introductory cover letter stating your education status, interests, future career goals, and any additional information you would like to share. Please email this letter to Amy.Sisson@advocatehealth.org. Candidates may be asked to participate in a brief 15-minute telephone interview. Candidates will be informed of the outcome of their application the week of December 8-12, 2025.
