Summer Research Assistant Position (20 hours/week) available for the Greensboro Jewish Community Oral History Project
The Project seeks to preserve existing oral histories related to Greensboro Jewish communal institutions and collect new ones over the course of the summer. The collection focuses on people in the Greensboro business and medical community and in the fields of human service, art, music, and education. The Summer 2025 project will focus on the stories of community leaders at all levels who have left their unique footprints and made a difference on Southern Jewish life.
The Greensboro Jewish Archives and Oral History Project is a collaborative effort between the UNCG University Libraries, the UNCG Department of History, the UNCG Jewish Studies Program, and Marilyn Chandler, Former CEO of the Greensboro Jewish Federation.
Approximate Dates (with some flexibility): June 2, 2025-August 8, 2025 (10 weeks)
Requirements: Candidates should be undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled at UNCG. Preferred Qualifications: Candidates majoring or minoring in History, Jewish Studies, Library and Information Sciences, or Media Studies. Non-UNCG students can volunteer on this project.
Supervision: Stacey Krim, Associate Professor and Curator of Manuscripts, UNCG University Libraries and Anne Parsons, Associate Professor, UNCG History Department
Payment: This is a paid position of $3600 (20 hours a week for 10 weeks at $18 an hour). Payments will begin on July 31.
Location: The student will work in person during oral histories and as needed in meetings with community partners. Otherwise, the student will work remotely.
Responsibilities:
- Transcription
- Work with UNCG Library Faculty and Staff on transcription, digitizing and cataloging exiting oral histories for UNCG’s digital collections.
- Help Collect Ten New Oral Histories
- Conduct preliminary research on potential interviewees, including reading any materials about them and reviewing any previous oral histories that they might have done (held at locations such as Greensboro Jewish Federation, Temple Emanuel, Greensboro History Museum, or Duke University).
- Help prepare and conduct preliminary research for oral histories.
- Videotape individual oral histories and secure signed interview agreements.
- Process the oral history interviews, preparing for publication online, and allows those taped to review the transcripts prior to publication online.
Present on this work at the UNCG Jewish Studies Conference or related event in Spring 2026.
The student may also assist with processing materials in the Temple Emanuel Archives at its Greene Street Campus, under the direction of Dr. Anne Parsons.
