The Bowman Rare Book Collection at Wilkes Community College's Pardue Library features a treasure trove of first, early, and significant editions of beloved serial fiction for young readers. Spanning the late 19th to mid-20th century, this collection showcases the golden age of children's publishing with works by American and British authors. Iconic characters like Tom Swift, The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and Tarzan come to life in these pages. Authors such as Horatio Alger, Jr. inspired readers with tales of adventure and the pursuit of the American Dream. The collection also offers thrilling stories of Boy Scout camping trips, World War I military service, collegiate sports, and space exploration
Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented intern from an archives and records management graduate program or a library science graduate program to assist with the accessioning and cataloging of our rare book collection and associated print materials. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of rare books and will provide valuable cataloging experience in the Evergreen ILS.
Responsibilities:
· Assist in the accessioning and cataloging of rare books.
· Conduct condition assessments and document findings.
· Collaborate with library staff on special projects as needed, such as updating finding aids or staging exhibits.
Qualifications:
· Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an archives and records management program or library science program.
· Strong organizational and analytical skills, with great attention to detail and accuracy.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Required Skills:
· Cataloging: Experience with library cataloging systems or completion of a cataloging course or related experience/training in archival management
· Database Management: Proficiency in using library databases and software for record-keeping and data entry.
· Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills to address challenges that may arise during the accessioning process.
